What’s the Next3rd?

What’s the Next3rd?

Simply put, it’s the last third of your life.  It can also be a very exciting time when you are free to decide how you will live your life’s third act.  I don’t call it retirement, I call it the next3rd.

Our Retirement Could Last 30-40 Years!

Our life expectancy is 30 years longer than it was 70 years ago.  The average age of first retirement is 58. That’s a big deal when we think about the concept of retirement.  Your retirement could be the longest stage of your life!  In the old retirement, you stopped working probably because you physically couldn’t do it any more.  And you likely died a few years later.  Not anymore.

Your Next3rd is as Unique as You

The good news is that you have more choice and freedom to decide how you live your next3rd. What you do, where you live, who you spend time with, and how you contribute, are up to you. You could choose to do work that truly engages you, be it paid or volunteer.  Re-discover your childhood passions, explore the globe or become a gym rat.  There is no set formula for all, its your life and your dream.

Start Before You Get There

Getting there successfully, takes a bit of reflection and planning, courage and action.  The transition from fully employed to the next3rd can be a big change.  It’s a turning point that can impact all aspects of your life, not just your career or finances.  After selling our business, our inboxes were quiet, our professional status and identity disappeared and our working friends were too busy to play.  My husband and I had to adjust to our new reality in a way that would suit both our needs and our dreams.

Thankfully, good research has discovered important keys to a successful transition to the next3rd.  We’ll explore how we can get ready for our next3rd and learn from others who paved their own way throughout this blog.  I would be thrilled if you’d like to come along for the ride!
